On December 3, 2016, GALANG Philippines will once again join the march for equality, for love, and for one’s well-being in the 10th LGBT Pride Parade in Baguio City. For the past eight years, GALANG, together with its partner lesbians, bisexual women, and trans men (LBTs) in the communities, have marched alongside human rights and LGBT advocates to resonate the voices of LBTs living in urban poor areas and their daily struggles against stigma and discrimination.
In line with the Baguio Pride’s theme, “Celebrating a Decade that is #AllForLoveAndPride,” GALANG continues to highlight the importance of well-being among LBTs by encouraging love, acceptance, and support from families, friends, and allies. GALANG’s Well-Being Index (WBI) Project, which looks at how LBT participants from seven (7) barangays in Quezon City evaluate their well-beings, indicated that support of families and friends are needed when LBTs go through processes of identity development and struggle against various forms of stigma and discrimination. Every opportunity to talk about and understand one’s sexuality will encourage acceptance and promote a culture that respects diversity.
GALANG also intensifies its call for the passage of the Anti-Discrimination Bill to address the lack of state policies against discrimination and hate crimes in the country. With the slogan “Karapatang Pinaghirapan, Patuloy na Ipaglaban,” GALANG hopes that the country be reminded of its rich history of fighting for democracy and freedom and should, therefore, ensure that our fundamental rights be uncompromised despite the government’s ongoing programs.
