Amidst all the celebration and events, one of the most important days to remember during Pride month is June 28—the Stonewall riots. Last Friday’s violent dispersal of the Pride March was like a replay when New York police officers raided the Stonewall Inn, and forcibly hauled the bar’s patrons and employees five decades ago. The raid was followed by days of unrest and protest which gave rise to the gay rights movement globally. That incident sparked conversations and long overdue changes needed in our society, but 51 years have passed since that fateful day, and we have yet to achieve genuine equality. We will continue to make our voices heard and fight for our rights.
